Richard Belzer, a beloved fixture on American television due to his iconic role as John Munch on 'Law & Order: Special Victims Unit' and several other shows, passed away at the age of 78 in Beaulieu-sur-Mer, France.

Richard Jay Belzer was born in Bridgeport, Connecticut in 1944. He worked as a reporter for the Bridgeport Post in the late 1960s and dreamt of one day becoming an acclaimed writer.

In 1972, Belzer relocated to New York City and made a name for himself in the stand-up comedy, the Improv and Catch a Rising Star.

He is survived by his third wife, actress Harlee McBride, who made multiple appearances as medical examiner Dr. Alyssa Dyer on “Homicide: Life on the Street”; as well as two stepdaughters.
